European Standards

European Standards

The EN 50131 Standards for Intruder Alarms Systems came into force on 1st October 2006 to replace a number of British Standards including BS 6799 and BS 4737. Some of these new European Standards have already been published; others are still in draft form. To overcome any gaps during the development and implementation of the new standards, the UK has produced a scheme document which is known as PD 6662:2004 Scheme for the application of European Standards for intruder and hold-up alarm systems.

PD 6662 concerns the design, specification, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of Intruder Alarm Systems and is designed to help ensure that Alarm Systems are installed in accordance with the European Standards.

The standards require an evaluation of risk and they define system grades. This 'risk-based' approach means that a formal risk assessment of the premises to consider all the possible risks has to be carried out. The system is then designed to protect these risks and is graded according to the level of risk assessed. The grade of system, 1 being the lowest and 4 the highest, will take into account many things such as; the building contents, the building construction and location, the occupancy of the premises and theft history. Your insurance provider may specify the grade of system required. The components of the system are also classified according to the kind of environment they're designed to work in.
